Election Aftermath

I don’t even know what to say, I have been trying to think of a way that this is some sort of joke or that there will be some scandalous re-count and Trump will be sent packing. There was no question for me that I would never vote for him, no matter what, and I thought that was the majority opinion. I almost feel like the media paved the way for him to win by misleading us that Hillary was the obvious winner so there are people out there that voted for the 3rd party or didn’t vote at all that might have, had they known this was going to happen.

I didn’t follow the campaigning very much, I don’t watch the news and I don’t listen to the radio. I have been in my own little bubble, just seeing the occasional meme or crazy rant on Facebook. I wish I had done more but I don’t know what that could have been, but I’m now thinking about what I can do to continue the progress of our society without falling back to gender inequality, racism, and overall bigotry and hate.

I just tried to explain to my 4 and 6 year old what happened in the election, that Donald Trump has been elected president and some of the things that might mean for them. I defined for them race and racism, feminism and bigotry. I told them that I didn’t know what was going to happen in the future but no matter what, we believe in equality for all and in being kind.

I’m going to start looking for ways to help out in our community and get prepared for what needs to be done but in the meantime I’m going to start small with overall kindness. I think we need to be kind to one another, we don’t need to love everyone but we need to show respect for others and their opinions. “If you don’t have anything nice to say then don’t say anything” type of stuff. We might have different opinions and backgrounds and ways we reached our decision but I think for the majority of us it comes down to wanting what is best for our country.

Definition of kind: generous, helpful and caring about other people (http://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/dictionary/english/kind)

Addicted to Crafting

Hello, my name is Sarah and I am addicted to crafting. Pretty much any kind of crafting but  lately I’ve been doing more jewelry making, specifically bead embroidery.

When I was a kid my aunt took me to some bead shows and showed me how to do some basics and since then I’ve always made random bits of jewelry for myself and occasionally others. I am still learning the ropes and it is very time consuming, this is not a quick bead stringing or wire wrapping, but I really like it and love all the little details. I would love to be able to just make unique jewelry pieces, maybe even source some of the materials myself (we started doing some rock hounding this summer and I am looking into how to cut and polish my own rocks) and sell them for lots of money and live happily ever after….

Ha!

Maybe one day when I have an actual creative space to call my own and not a dresser crammed high with all my craft stuff in a corner of my bedroom.

My plan is to learn and practice as much as possible and find a little niche to focus on, then when our garage conversion is done and we move into the new master and the kids move into the larger room I will then take over the small bedroom and set up shop! It will be a while but I can’t wait!

In other news I think I am going to join the Mt. Hood Rock Club. I went to one of their meetings and once I am a member I will have access to their lapidary equipment studio so I can learn how to make cabochons (cabs – rock or other material that has a flat side and usually a polished and domed finished side) out of the rocks I find! They also go on “field trips” to do rock hounding which would be really helpful since I really have no idea what I’m doing when we have gone out, lol!

I’ll keep you updated and post more pictures of what I’m making on Instagram and I have a Pinterest board with inspirations and tutorials: pdxchic beeeeeads board

The last necklace I made:black-and-green-necklace

Summers over and school has just begun!

I can’t believe the summer is over! I just dropped my oldest off on her first day of first grade and even though it feels like summer shouldn’t be over I am feeling ready for school to begin!

We had a packed summer full of camping, working on the house, being lazy and getting our craft on. I of course didn’t write about any of it but now I’m feeling like sitting down and getting to it!

Hope you all had a great summer! Kind of excited for sweater and boot weather!

Easy Pork Fried Rice

I love fried rice but have never made it before. After pursuing Pinterest for recipies it seemed like it was pretty easy to put together. I didn’t have some of the items that were traditional for fried rice so I made my own version, I really liked it but Mike was a little on the fence. I had added freshly minced ginger and it was a bit much for him so I think next time I won’t add as much or not at all (I really like ginger though so I thought it was yummy).  Continue reading

Getting ready to remodel!

And so it begins!

In January we (us and my parents) purchased the house we have been renting for almost 11 years! We are going to update the house and convert the garage into a bedroom with bathroom. We are thinking that we will either sell the house, rent it out or maybe live in it a bit longer once everything is done, depending on the housing market at that time but that is a ways out so for now we are just focusing on the remodel.  Continue reading

Kalua Pork!

A couple of weeks ago my daughters school had a “luau night” complete with hula dancers, a ukulele show and Hawaiian dinner. I haven’t had kalua pork in a long time and had completely forgotten about it but I will not be making that mistake again! It was SO good! I also had the macaroni salad (mac salad) which I didn’t care for but that’s not unusual for me as I don’t usually like potato or pasta salads unless they are homemade.
